Effect of incubation time and concentration of animals in grazing experiments using a narrow size range of particles OMA
Tackx, M.; Polk, P..
Three concentrations of <i>A. tonsa</i> adults were allowed to feed on a narrow size range suspension of particles. Sampling was done at 4-hour intervals during 24 hours. It is shown that both animal concentration and incubation time considerably influence the obtained ingestion rates and filtering-spectra. These results are discussed in relation to different calculation methods and models.

Estimating forage intake of lactating dual-purpose cows using chromium oxide and n-alkanes as external markers Scientia Agricola
Oliveira,Dimas Estrasulas de; Medeiros,Sérgio Raposo de; Tedeschi,Luis Orlindo; Aroeira,Luís Januário Magalhães; Silva,Sila Carneiro da.
The n-alkanes have been used to estimate forage dry matter intake, digestibility and the diet composition in grazing animals. The objective this study was to compare chromium oxide and n-alkanes techniques used to estimate forage intake. Twenty lactating dual-purpose cows receiving two sources of fat (treatments: conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) or Megalac (control)) plus 4 kg of concentrate were dosed with n-alkanes and chromium oxide to estimate the intake of stargrass (Cynodon nlemfüensis Vanderyst var. nlemfüensis). The in vitro dry matter (DM) digestibility of the stargrass and concentrate were used to estimate the nutritive value of the digesta. The n-alkanes between C23 and C36 were quantified in the digesta and feces. The regression between...

Estimating the economic implications for grazing properties in the Mackay Whitsunday catchments of practice changes to more sustainable landscapes AgEcon
East, Miriam.
In the Mackay Whitsunday region, the dominant grazing based operations are small intensive systems that heavily utilise soil, nutrient and chemical management practices. To improve water quality entering the Great Barrier Reef, graziers are being encouraged to adopt improved management practices. However, while there is good understanding of the management changes required to reach improved practice classification levels, there is poor understanding of the likely economic implications for a grazier seeking to move from a lower level classification to the higher level classifications. This paper provides analysis of the costs and benefits associated with adoption of intensive grazing best management practices to determine the effect on the profitability and...

Expected Utility Analysis of Stocker Cattle Ownership Versus Contract Grazing in the Southeast AgEcon
Anderson, John D.; Lacy, Curt; Forrest, Charlie S.; Little, Randall D..
Stocker cattle ownership is compared to contract grazing using stochastic simulation. Returns are evaluated for both cattle owners and caretakers in contract grazing agreements. For caretakers, contract grazing is significantly less risky than cattle ownership. Slightly to moderately risk-averse caretakers could be expected to prefer some type of contract grazing to direct ownership of cattle. For cattle owners, contracting reduces risk only slightly while significantly reducing expected returns.

Factors affecting bacterial biomass and growth in the Duplin River estuary and coastal Atlantic Ocean. ArchiMer
Fallon, R; Newell, S; Sherr, B; Sheer, E.
Bacterial numbers and growth rates were measured in coastal, planktonic systems of the Western Atlantic ocean. Seasonal responses in growth rates of the bacterial assemblage were present at some sites, but these may be related to seasonal changes in substrate supply rather than to changes in temperature. Bacterial growth rates tended to decline with increasing distance from shore. There was evidence for predator-prey population cycles in the bacteria and < 17 mu m protozoa in the Duplin River Estuary which may indicate that the bacterial assemblage serves as prey for protozoan populations. In summer, a significant negative correlation between mu (instantaneous growth rate) and cell numbers in the bacterial assemblage indicated that substrate limitation...

Floristic and structural patterns in South Brazilian coastal grasslands Anais da ABC (AABC)
MENEZES,LUCIANA S.; MÜLLER,SANDRA C.; OVERBECK,GERHARD E..
ABSTRACT The natural vegetation of Southern Brazil's coastal region includes grasslands formations that are poorly considered in conservation policy, due to the lack of knowledge about these systems. This study reports results from a regional-scale survey of coastal grasslands vegetation along a 536 km gradient on southern Brazil. We sampled 16 sites along the coastal plain with 15 plots (1 m²) per site. All sites were grazed by cattle. We estimated plant species cover, vegetation height, percentage of bare soil, litter and manure, and classified species according to their growth forms. We found 221 species, 14 of them exotic and two threatened. The prostate grasses: Axonopus aff.affinis, Paspalum notatum and P. pumilumwere among the most important...

Foraging behavior and ruminal fermentation of dairy cows grazing ryegrass pasture alone or with white clover PAB
Ribeiro Filho,Henrique Mendonça Nunes; Peyraud,Jean-Louis; Delagarde,Rémy.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of pasture composition and regrowth age on the relationship between feeding behavior and ruminal fermentation in dairy cows grazing perennial ryegrass with or without white clover. The experiment was carried out in a 2x2 factorial arrangement, with two sward types and two ages of regrowth. Swards of perennial ryegrass sown alone (PRG) and of perennial ryegrass mixed with white clover (GC) were evaluated. Twelve late-lactation Holstein cows, fistulated at the rumen, were distributed in a 4x4 latin square experimental design with four 12-day periods. Daily distribution of grazing was similar in the PRG and the GC swards, but the concentration of rumen volatile fatty acids (VFA) was higher and the...

Free-living nematodes affect oxygen turnover of artificial diatom biofilms ArchiMer
Mathieu, M; Leflaive, J; Ten Hage, L; De Wit, R; Buffan Dubau, E.
The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of biofilm-dwelling nematode activity on the oxygen turnover of cultured diatom biofilms. Oxygen microprofiles were simultaneously measured using the microelectrode technique in biofilms incubated with and without nematodes during short-term (24 h) and medium-term (6 d) experiments. During 24 h nycthemeral incubations, maximum oxygen concentrations and oxygen peak depths of microprofiles, as well as net oxygen production rates, were significantly higher in the diatom biofilms with nematodes. These effects might be dependent on the densities of nematodes. In the present study, significant effects were observed at nematode densities exceeding 100 ind. cm(-2), but not at a density <50 ind. cm(-2)....

Grazing affects carbon fixation pathways by phytoplankton in coastal marine ecosystems ArchiMer
Collos, Y; Descolas Gros, C; Mornet, Francoise.
During parallel sampling of seawater samples in bottles and in free water (1000-2000 m(3) clay ponds), we have measured phytoplankton biomass, Ribulose biphosphate carboxylase (Rubisco), phosphoenol pyruvate carboxylase, and phosphoenol pyruvate carboxykinase activities and major nutrients (ammonium, nitrate, phosphate, silicate). This was done in two ecosystems: one with high grazing pressure due to the presence of oysters and another with low grazing pressure (no oysters). In the ecosystem subjected to high grazing pressure, anaplerotic carbon fixation by phytoplankton in free water was higher in the light period and could represent 25% of total carbon fixation. Incubating samples in bottles led to a major increase in Rubisco activity (80% in 3 h)...

GRAZING MANAGEMENT, AMMONIA AND NITROUS OXIDE EMISSIONS: A GENERAL VIEW R.C. Suelo Nutr. Veg.
Núñez,Pedro; Demanet,Rolando; Matus,Francisco; Mora,Maria de la Luz.
The grazing management of grassland has a direct effect on nitrogen (N) recycling. This is an important reason why management has become an alternative to improve the grassland production and quality, in turn to make it more suitable for the environment. However, the livestock system intensification induces changes in the natural dynamics of the N cycle, accelerating gas emmisions (e.g. ammonia, NH3 and nitrous oxide, N(2)0) and leaching losses from soil under grazing. When the amount of N in the environment increases, there is an impact on smog episodes, global warming, stratospheric ozone depletion, acid rain and eutrophication of fresh water. There are different techniques to evaluate the gases emitted from the soil. This klonowledge is useful to design...

Grazing of particle-associated bacteria-an elimination of the non-viable fraction BJM
Gonsalves,Maria-Judith; Fernandes,Sheryl Oliveira; Priya,Madasamy Lakshmi; LokaBharathi,Ponnapakkam Adikesavan.
Abstract Quantification of bacteria being grazed by microzooplankton is gaining importance since they serve as energy subsidies for higher trophic levels which consequently influence fish production. Hence, grazing pressure on viable and non-viable fraction of free and particle-associated bacteria in a tropical estuary controlled mainly by protist grazers was estimated using the seawater dilution technique. In vitro incubations over a period of 42 h showed that at the end of 24 h, growth coefficient (k) of particle-associated bacteria was 9 times higher at 0.546 than that of free forms. Further, ‘k’ value of viable cells on particles was double that of free forms at 0.016 and 0.007, respectively. While bacteria associated with particles were grazed...

Grazing patterns on signalgrass pasture according to location of cattle feces R. Bras. Zootec.
Santos,Manoel Eduardo Rozalino; Fonseca,Dilermando Miranda da; Gomes,Virgílio Mesquita; Braz,Thiago Gomes dos Santos; Silva,Simone Pedro da; Albino,Ronan Lopes; Santos,Andreza Luzia; Silva,Guilherme Portes.
This study was conducted to evaluate the defoliation patterns on B. decumbens cv. Basilisk (signalgrass) tiller as a function of influence of feces deposited naturally by cattle. The signalgrass was managed with an average height of 25 cm, under continuous stocking and variable stocking rate. Interval and intensity of defoliation, grazing efficiency and forage loss were evaluated in two sites on pasture - one close and the other distant from feces. The completely randomized block design with three replications was adopted. The defoliation rate of the pasture site close to feces was 40% lower than at that distant from feces. This response pattern was similar to defoliation intensity of leaf blade. The leaf blade of the tiller close to feces also achieved...

Independent effects of grazing and tide pool habitats on the early colonisation of an intertidal community on western Antarctic Peninsula RChHN
Segovia-Rivera,V; Valdivia,N.
BACKGROUND: Prevailing environmental conditions can modulate the structuring role of biotic interactions. In intertidal habitats, less stressful environmental conditions and/or higher grazer densities may allow grazing effects to be stronger in tide pools than on emergent rocks. To test this hypothesis, we conducted a manipulative experiment on an intertidal rocky shore in Fildes Bay, King George Island, in which the effect of the dominant grazer Nacella polaris on the structure of benthic periphyton communities was compared between emergent rock and tide pool habitats. Also, we determined the spatial variation in density, weight, and maximum length of individuals of N. polaris in both habitats RESULTS: The density of N. polaris was significantly larger in...

Induction of Phlorotannins and Gene Expression in the Brown Macroalga Fucus vesiculosus in Response to the Herbivore Littorina littorea ArchiMer
Emeline, Creis Bendelac; Ludovic, Delage; Laurent, Vallet; Catherine, Leblanc; Kruse, Inken; Erwan, Ar Gall; Florian, Weinberger; Philippe, Potin.
Mechanisms related to the induction of phlorotannin biosynthesis in marine brown algae remain poorly known. Several studies undertaken on fucoid species have shown that phlorotannins accumulate in the algae for several days or weeks after being exposed to grazing, and this is measured by direct quantification of soluble phenolic compounds. In order to investigate earlier inducible responses involved in phlorotannin metabolism, Fucus vesiculosus was studied between 6 and 72 h of grazing by the sea snail Littorina littorea. In this study, the quantification of soluble phenolic compounds was complemented by a Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) approach applied on genes that are potentially involved in either the phlorotannin metabolism or stress responses....
